Celebrating 175 Years of California Statehood

Map showing California for 175th Anniversary of StatehoodCalifornia officially became the 31st state in the Union on September 9, 1850.

This year, join us in celebrating the 175th Anniversary of California’s Statehood.

California’s journey to statehood was shaped by the resilience, determination, and vision of its people. Long before 1850, Native American tribes lived across the region – communities that have existed since time immemorial. The path to statehood accelerated in 1848 with two pivotal events: the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War and transferred California to US control, and the discovery of gold near the American River. The Gold Rush drew thousands in search of opportunity and created an urgent need for governance.

Today, California stands as a global leader as home to over 39 million people and the fourth-largest economy in the world. It is one of the most diverse states in the nation, with a rich cultural tapestry that includes the second-largest population of Native American tribes in the US.

As a powerhouse in agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, California plays a vital role in the nation’s economy. But beyond its economic impact, California has long been a beacon of innovation and advocacy by leading movements for civil rights, environmental protection, and groundbreaking achievements in science, technology, and the arts.

Known as a land of dreamers and doers, California’s story continues to be written by those who believe in a better future. This anniversary celebrates the past 175 years and the people who shape California every day.
