STAR Tutoring
Free tutoring to help students in grades 1 through 6 learn, grow, and succeed
STAR Tutoring is a small group, in-person tutoring program held at select LA County Library locations, designed to help students improve their reading or math skills. Tutoring services are open to students who are enrolled in Grades 1-6. All tutoring will take place at the participating library locations and all materials will be provided.
The Winter/Spring Session will be held from January 20 – May 21, 2026. Participants are required to attend one 60-minute appointment each week of the program for continued enrollment.

Online Tutoring & Student Resources
Looking for additional tutoring help or other helpful library learning resources?
We offer online turoring for students in grades K – 12 via Brainfuse, available from 1 to 11:59 pm in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Tutors cover math, science, English, social studies, and essay review.

Who can participate?
Tutoring services are open to students who are currently enrolled in Grades 1 – 6 during the 2025-2026 academic year.
What if my student is in Kindergarten or older than Grade 6? Can they still participate?
The STAR Tutoring program is only available to students who are currently enrolled in Grades 1 – 6 during the 2025-2026 academic year. Services are not designed to assist students outside these specified grade levels.

How long are tutoring appointments?
Each tutoring appointment will be approximately 60 minutes long. Participants are required to attend one 60-minute appointment each week of the program for continued enrollment.

How can I register my student?
Students will be enrolled on a first-come basis through our online Interest Form.
Parents, guardians, and/or caregivers are required to sign and submit a Program Agreement Form before services begin.
How will I know if my student has been accepted into tutoring?
Confirmations will be sent within 7-10 days of submitting an online Interest Form.
Will my student get priority if they previously participated in a tutoring program at the Library?
All enrollments will be made on a first-come basis.
Can we switch subjects mid-way through the STAR Tutoring session?
No, subject changes will not be allowed once services begin.
Will my student have one-on-one tutoring?
Services are provided in a small group setting with up to 3 students per group and 1 tutor. We will do our best to group students with others in the same or similar grade.
How many appointments does my child need to attend?
Attendance at each tutoring appointment is mandatory.
We ask parents and caregivers to carefully consider other schedule obligations before submitting an online Interest Form and reserving a space in the program.
Do I need to be present during all appointments?
Parents and guardians are asked to walk their students to and from the tutoring area. Tutors and Library staff are not responsible for the supervision of students left unattended.
You are welcome to remain in the tutoring area or take advantage of the variety of materials and resources available at the Library including books, magazines, computers, and more!
What happens if my student misses a lesson?
Students are required to attend all appointments to maximize the benefits of this no-cost tutoring service. Students who miss two (2) appointments for any reason, will be removed from services and another student placed in their spot.

Can my student with special needs or learning disabilities enroll?
STAR Tutoring welcomes students of all abilities who are enrolled in Grades 1-6 during the 2025-26 school year. Our program is designed to provide sustained tutoring in a fun, engaged, and supportive learning environment through regular instruction and learning activities.
STAR Tutoring is not an intervention program nor can tutors provide recommendations or diagnose any concerns you may have with your student’s academic progress or behaviors. Can my student be tutored in another language? What about students who go to a dual language or bilingual school?
STAR Tutoring instruction and materials are only delivered in English.
Who will be tutoring my student?
LA County has contracted with the tutoring company StudentNest to provide professional tutoring services. They have provided tutoring throughout the United States for more than 20 years. Learn more about StudentNest.
What skills will the the tutors cover?
Tutors will complete assessments with each student during the first and last appointments of the session to measure the impact of the program. Tutors will use the information they receive from the initial assessment to inform your student’s tutoring appointments.
Do you communicate with my student’s teacher or school?
LA County Library is not in a formal partnership with any school for STAR Tutoring and we do not have access to any academic information.
Can the tutors help with homework assignments?
No. STAR Tutoring tutors are not able to provide homework assistance for any subject.
Homework support for students in Grades 1-12 is available at our drop-in Homework Centers. Please visit your local library for additional information.
Online homework help is available to LA County Library cardholders via Brainfuse. Online tutors are available to assist with math, science, reading/writing, social studies, test prep (PSAT/SAT, ACT, AP, and standardized), and more!
